The Gap Year
Jan 30th
The gap year has also been referred to as a career break, year off, year abroad, deferred year and a time out. And really, who doesn’t need a time out once in awhile? The tradition of taking a gap year began during the 1960′s in England, and was usually taken after secondary school ended and before the first year of college or university. In 1978 Charles, the Prince of Wales began the Raleigh International which comprised of Operation Drake, a gap year expedition voyage around the world following Sir Francis Drake’s route.
With the advent of Operation Drake, the gap year took on a new purpose. Students were taking the opportunity to work or volunteer abroad in order to expand their skill set and seek wider opportunities.
Students in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada often participate in international education programs, cultural immersion and independent study. It became such a huge phenomenon in Denmark that the government began to limit the number of students who took a year off from schooling. Students who delayed their education were often penalized, even if the time was spent working. In 2009, instead of penalizing students, the government began giving out monetary bonuses to students who continued on without a break.
In British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario, Canada many students choose to go tree planting for a season or two before starting university. The work takes place in remote areas of the provinces, in the midst of majestic forests and diverse wildlife. Workers are housed and fed in logging camps and the conditions are similar to those of the early 20th century, with electricity often being knocked out. The benefit of tree planting is the potential wage. Planters are paid on volume, and if they do well, can earn up to $10,000US per season. However, due to rising costs of food and utilities, that amount has declined in the past few years.
Three lands who do not take part in the gap year tradition are the US, South Korea and Japan. In the US, the reason may be that medical coverage for students ends when they graduate from high school, however many believe the expense of post secondary tuition is to blame. In Japan and South Korea, the reason is much different. During the post-world war two era, the Simultaneous Recruiting of New Graduates custom began. Particularly in Japan, students begin their job hunting before they finish school so they can make some preliminary decisions on employment. Here is where the Simultaneous Recruiting of New Graduates comes in. Companies come in to a school and based upon skills and grade points, will mass hire new graduates all at once and immediately employ them. Companies in Japan for the most part, only hire students scheduled to graduate in the spring. Therefore, if a student does not decide what they want to do before they finish school, either secondary or post secondary, they will face enormous hardship when they enter the job market.
As the globe becomes smaller and social awareness on international issues becomes more prevalent, the gap year tradition is shifting. Students from Canada and the UK in particular are choosing to use their year to volunteer in third world countries or teach English as a foreign language. Young people see these opportunities as a chance to gain an international perspective and make a difference. Some choose to travel with their local church and go on missions, others choose to join a volunteer organization such as Volunteer Abroad. In Canada, many people have decided to take teaching positions in Asian countries. One year contracts to teach English in elementary schools are relatively easy to obtain, offer a great international experience, and pay a fairly decent wage by western standards.
The concept of a gap year began as an opportunity to explore and relax before beginning university. Now the tradition incorporates so much more than exploration. Students are traveling, finding work, helping their fellow human beings and gaining a wider perspective on the world they live in. All of the experiences they gain will add to their own skill set as they evolve into careers. The trick in making a gap year successful is not in the destination, but in the appreciation of what is learned. Take the knowledge into college or university, and eventually into your working life.

Need Cash? Sell Used Textbooks!
Dec 17th
The economy has been hard on people around the country and the world for quite awhile now, and people are searching desperately for any and every possibility they can find to earn some extra cash. The job-market has pretty much dried up, and since everyone seems to be in the same situation, selling things are a bit difficult too. So what’s left? To be honest, we prize our possessions, so even the thought of pawning everything we own tends to be a literal last resort. After that, people usually give up. I know it’s sad to hear, and even sadder being that person.
This kind of economy doesn’t effect just one or two people, but it affects all of them in many ways that were unheard of in the better times. Business people, entertainers, and even students are feeling the crunch. It may seems like an unheard of concept since most students look at the job market and feel a bit helpless. It’s not as much of a stretch as some would think. Students, and former students have a bit of an advantage in situations like these. What a lot of these students and former students don’t realize, is that the majority of them have a good money-making opportunity that they rarely think of.
If you have been to school, or you are still in the process of going to school but have completed a little of it, then you more than likely have textbooks all over your house. Most of them aren’t even of use to you anymore. It’s a great time to take advantage and use them for more than just the knowledge they contain. This is a good chance to rent textbooks to others that can’t afford to buy them new, or to just outright sell used textbooks to the new students at a much cheaper price than they could get anywhere else.
It’s a great money-maker, and there are so many textbooks out of the typical price range for most students that when you sell used textbooks to them, you also become a bit of a hero. If you decide it’s a better option to rent textbooks out, it is good in a lot of different ways. The students that rent textbooks from you would more than likely prefer not to keep them when the school period is over, so it’s a win win situation for you! You will get the books back and be able to rent textbooks to the next group of students that comes along. They save money, and you create multiple streams of income for yourself. Each new group of students in, is a new sort of client for you. As long as the textbook you already own is still in use with the school, you will continue to make money.
Renting is not always the best option, as it does take a lot of follow up form you in terms of whether or not he textbook is still in use. It may be good to just out right sell used textbooks back to the school or to the bookstore where you bought them. A lot of times, when you go to a school bookstore, you will see a vast section of Used Textbooks. Guess what? That’s where they come from.
When a student starts a course, there is a certain budget for everything they will need to complete the term. A very large part of that budget goes to buying books necessary for classes. Nobody ever said they had to be new though. As you have probably already been able to determine, textbooks serve much more use than just the school term you need them for. Some students go back to them to re-learn what they learned the previous school term, and others utilize them for a source of financial income. Income for you, and a better alternative for the students coming into the new term makes the textbooks even more valuable.
So school is a place of learning and a place to move forward in the world with an education and an intelligence that can get you through even the worst of times. With the status of the economy as it has been for a few years now, this can be classified as one of those worst of times. For those that utilize textbooks not only to gain the knowledge necessary to move on from school level to school level, but to also give them a valid source of income from those very textbooks, those students are the ones who will truly excel later in life.
Once school is over, it’s time to put all of that knowledge to sue to give you and your future family a comfortable existence, but comfort isn’t always a possibility in time like these. However, for those that understand the viability of renting or selling used textbooks, it can help make the rough times more bearable. When all else fails, or just out for some extra cash, sell used textbooks.

My Roommate
Dec 16th
Roommates. As a student, the word brings a plethora of images to mind. There’s the time when I obtained locked out on accident by my roommate when showering. Then there’s the time my roommate did a 3:00 A.M. cheer for me throughout finals week. There’s also the time when we both kept placing a strange searching scarf on every other’s desk, until a few months later when we discovered it didn’t belong to either of us.
Roommates make faculty a much better encounter. They can be finicky, challenging or moody at times, but in the end, a excellent roommate is 1 you can cry with, speak to, and trust. Living with a roommate at 1st can be frustrating if you’re an only youngster or applied to obtaining your own way, but once you get utilized to it, getting a roommate is like possessing an individual that’s always acquired your back.
I keep in mind the day I woke up ten minutes just before I was supposed to be at function. It was my 1st week on the job and my boss had overly emphasized how important it was to be on time. To make matters worse, I didn’t have a automobile and was planning on walking, even though it was pouring outside. Following asking my half lucid roommate if she could take me, we had been zipping away in her SUV. Miraculously, I barely produced it in time for function.
As you reside with roommates, they turn out to be family members. You learn their habits, and discover out about their quirks. You know their routine, their sleeping schedule and preferred snacks. Just like household, roommates turn into a sort of bottom. You know they’ll be there for you.
For me, university life is produced easier by possessing that type of a solid bottom. A loyal roommate is a excellent foundation, but a home that I can constantly turn back again to is far better. Realizing my family is often there for me assists. Even my family’s residence can serve as a base. Possessing the exact same home for years, nevertheless on the exact same corner waiting for me, is comforting. In order to have that sort of a home foundation although, families have to be prepared to function to preserve it secure. They have to let their faculty students know they are even now there for them and they have to maintain their home protected. 1 great way to guard the home is by means of a home security system.
