How To Get Money For School
Apr 11th
When a student decides to further their education past high school, they probably have a direction in mind, some kind of goal that they want to work for. It helps if they are able to narrow down the careers they would like before deciding what college they want to go to. Knowing what career they want is the first step to deciding on a good college. They would want to consider whether they want to go to college in town or out of town. If out of town, they must decide if they want to live on campus or off campus. There are many decisions that must be made right away.
Once the student has decided on a path or a direction, they will have to look at it from a financial point of view. If funds are not available to pay for the tuition, fees, books and other necessities, financial aid is usually available in some form. The college that is chosen will have financial advisors to help a new student understand what they need to do to apply for and receive financial aid.
A financial advisor can usually take you through a step by step process when applying for financial aid. You will need to be a citizen with a valid social security number. You will need to have the forms from your previous tax year. You will report all of your information to the financial advisor or to the appropriate contact who will go over what needs to be gone over and will inform you what you are entitled to.
A college usually has a website that can be explored for information about tuition, fees and financial aid. It can also help you narrow down your search by other factors, such as location or specialty. If you are a single parent with one income and several children, you might find it easier to get the expenses paid through financial aid loans and grants.
Help is given on a need basis, meaning that those who truly need the help do receive it. In this case, the government has kept on the ball providing students everywhere with enough money to successfully get a good college education.
How much you receive in federal loans and grants will be determined by your individual status, your personal income and a few other factors. It is different from person to person because most people have a unique situation to deal with. Financial counseling and advice is necessary whether you pay for your education on your own or not.
Any student who is coming right out of high school and is still living with a parent will have to decide if they are going to attend college in their hometown or if they are going out of town. They may need to incorporate living expenses, on campus of off, in any calculations they make about how much money they will need.

The Gap Year
Jan 30th
The gap year has also been referred to as a career break, year off, year abroad, deferred year and a time out. And really, who doesn’t need a time out once in awhile? The tradition of taking a gap year began during the 1960′s in England, and was usually taken after secondary school ended and before the first year of college or university. In 1978 Charles, the Prince of Wales began the Raleigh International which comprised of Operation Drake, a gap year expedition voyage around the world following Sir Francis Drake’s route.
With the advent of Operation Drake, the gap year took on a new purpose. Students were taking the opportunity to work or volunteer abroad in order to expand their skill set and seek wider opportunities.
Students in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada often participate in international education programs, cultural immersion and independent study. It became such a huge phenomenon in Denmark that the government began to limit the number of students who took a year off from schooling. Students who delayed their education were often penalized, even if the time was spent working. In 2009, instead of penalizing students, the government began giving out monetary bonuses to students who continued on without a break.
In British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario, Canada many students choose to go tree planting for a season or two before starting university. The work takes place in remote areas of the provinces, in the midst of majestic forests and diverse wildlife. Workers are housed and fed in logging camps and the conditions are similar to those of the early 20th century, with electricity often being knocked out. The benefit of tree planting is the potential wage. Planters are paid on volume, and if they do well, can earn up to $10,000US per season. However, due to rising costs of food and utilities, that amount has declined in the past few years.
Three lands who do not take part in the gap year tradition are the US, South Korea and Japan. In the US, the reason may be that medical coverage for students ends when they graduate from high school, however many believe the expense of post secondary tuition is to blame. In Japan and South Korea, the reason is much different. During the post-world war two era, the Simultaneous Recruiting of New Graduates custom began. Particularly in Japan, students begin their job hunting before they finish school so they can make some preliminary decisions on employment. Here is where the Simultaneous Recruiting of New Graduates comes in. Companies come in to a school and based upon skills and grade points, will mass hire new graduates all at once and immediately employ them. Companies in Japan for the most part, only hire students scheduled to graduate in the spring. Therefore, if a student does not decide what they want to do before they finish school, either secondary or post secondary, they will face enormous hardship when they enter the job market.
As the globe becomes smaller and social awareness on international issues becomes more prevalent, the gap year tradition is shifting. Students from Canada and the UK in particular are choosing to use their year to volunteer in third world countries or teach English as a foreign language. Young people see these opportunities as a chance to gain an international perspective and make a difference. Some choose to travel with their local church and go on missions, others choose to join a volunteer organization such as Volunteer Abroad. In Canada, many people have decided to take teaching positions in Asian countries. One year contracts to teach English in elementary schools are relatively easy to obtain, offer a great international experience, and pay a fairly decent wage by western standards.
The concept of a gap year began as an opportunity to explore and relax before beginning university. Now the tradition incorporates so much more than exploration. Students are traveling, finding work, helping their fellow human beings and gaining a wider perspective on the world they live in. All of the experiences they gain will add to their own skill set as they evolve into careers. The trick in making a gap year successful is not in the destination, but in the appreciation of what is learned. Take the knowledge into college or university, and eventually into your working life.

FAFSA Forms
Jan 25th
Every college has its own particular ways for its prospective students to pay for their college education. The FAFSA financial aid system is one of the better ways to get you the help that you require.
To receive this aid you must fill out the FAFSA form that comes with the aid package. Prior to filling this form out, you will need to read the package conditions and terms in full.
You should ask for help understanding any details that you have difficulty with. You may get this help from your school counsellor and the FAFSA web site will provide you with the information you need. In addition you will find many useful links there. These links will let you see the documents that you will need to have when you are applying for financial aid using the FAFSA form.
You may come across other financial packages that you feel might offer better terms for financial aid. However, it is always best to compare these packages closely with that of the FAFSA financial aid package.
When you are getting ready to fill out the FAFSA form, you should make sure that you have all the relevant documentation to hand that is required by the FAFSA form. These documents are principally used to determine the sincerity of your need for financial aid. You will need an adult (usually your parents or guardian) to read the section of the FAFSA form that pertains to them.
You will be able to get hold of a copy of the FAFSA form very easily. These forms are available in online and hardcopy formats. You can get a copy of the form from several places, eg the financial aid office of every college or university will have copies of these forms for you to take away.
Your high school should also have FAFSA forms and any other information you may need. You can ask to be sent a FAFSA form by phoning 1-800-4-FED -AID. The forms are also available at your local library. These are the locations where you can expect to find the hardcopy versions of the FAFSA form. The online version is available on their web site.
If you use the online method of filing your FAFSA form, you will receive some worthwhile benefits. These benefits include getting your student aid report more quickly than by using the paper version. You will also know if there are any errors in your application form at once. The last benefit that you will receive is the knowledge that you are helping the federal government to save money.
Since all student loans have associated records maintained of the money that you have drawn down, you will need to work out some way of re-paying the student loan. The FAFSA form will provide you with the information you need to work out re-paying your student loan on time and in an efficient manner.
