Getting A Job Out Of College
Sep 11th
Being a college grad job seeker, especially during an economic downturn, can be difficult. The competition for advertised job listings is often too great. By following the crowd and applying only for jobs everyone else has is a common mistake made by job seekers. If you want to find employment with little or no competition, then you will definitely benefit in finding unadvertised jobs during your job hunt. Employers with job openings often times prefer not to advertise or list them with employment agencies. Rather, employers prefer asking other people, such as current employees to recommend someone.
However, you will have far less competition for the jobs you want if you look for ones that are not advertised. You can find a plethora of jobs that are out there, but just are not openly advertised and placed with employment agencies. These kinds of jobs are filled through personal recommendations and inside hires, for the most part.
You can find hidden jobs in two different varieties:
1. First, you can find job openings that are set by the employer. To begin with, you have to pick a field that you want to get into, as well as have the necessary expertise and passion for. After that, do some research by hitting the nearest library and looking for 25 or more companies that fit that description, using employer directories such as the Million Dollar Directory from Dun and Bradstreet, or the Register of Corporations from Standard and Poor. You can also get help from the DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles) and OOH (Occupational Outlook Handbook) in order to find the jobs that you would like, and what you have to have to qualify for them. You can even get an idea of how much they pay from the OOH.
2. You could also have the opportunity to make your own job that doesn’t exist yet. This gives you the ability to determine how much money you will get paid, and it ensures you the job. Write to interested companies about your proposal for this position. Outline in detail exactly how you will help their company using whatever services you have available, and how it is worth the amount of money you are asking for.
Once you are able to accomplish either of these things, you will be sure to get a fantastic job doing what you love doing.
