The Increasing Number Of Student Escorts
Oct 28th
The recent introduction of university top-up fees along with the economic uncertainty caused by the recession has led to the most financially difficult times for students. Unsteady growth in the economy and government indications that students may have to pay even more in the future will not make things any easier. It may come as no surprise then that nothing is off limits – not even escorting – when it comes to earning money to fund study.
The numbers are startling. One in four students claim to be aware of other students who work in the sex industry while more than one in ten students have themselves contemplated turning to escorting, according to a report from Kingston University by Dr. Don Roberts. Students, despite the ambiguity of the word ‘escort’, are well aware that escorts are expected to have sex with their clients – those that think sex isn’t necessarily a condition of escorting still believe the temptation of taking money for sex would be strong, says the Manchester student newspaper Student Direct.
There are real advantages to escorting work say students – it pays a lot more than usual student jobs that take place in bars or shops and the hours can be more flexible allowing the social life that students still want to enjoy. Yet the biggest disadvantage, the social stigma still attached to the idea of escort work, remains a big enough obstacle to turn most people off. Most but not all, as the same study from Dr. Roberts concludes that people from traditionally more privileged social backgrounds are more open than ever to working as escorts.
The concern that students feel as if they have no option other than escorting is a major one for the National Union of Students who feel that governments and universities could provide more support. But both the government and universities have been unwilling to tackle the problem as it has not been too highly publicized as of yet and they are wary of drawing attention to it.
While the universities and government ignores these issues, and the job market remains a competitive place in uncertain economic times, it is unlikely that the trend in increasing numbers of desperate students pursuing escort work will change any time soon.

The Cost Of University And Debt
Aug 7th
As kids are getting towards the age where they will be leaving school, they are promised that if they go to University they will be set on a path to a great career and loads of money. Of course, the statistics do show that graduates earn more than people who did not get a degree. However, to actually get the degree that will lead to the highly paid career, they must first work out exactly how they will pay for it!
Yes, students starting University in the UK in 2010 are expected to graduate with debts of around 20,000. Student loans and tuition fee loans are only partly to blame as well. On top of these, there are credit cards and overdrafts as well. But just what do students spend so much on?
After they have paid their tuition fees, what is next? Well it is the costs of things that are totally necessary like rent on their accommodation, the bills such as gas and electricity and obviously there is food to consider also. When you have no job, so therefore no regular income, it can be very difficult to pay for these things without some extra help. Add onto this the important costs associated with a university course such as books and materials and it can get very expensive. This is all before fun recreational activities, so you can see exactly why students turn to credit cards and overdrafts to help them through.
Most banks in the UK offer student accounts that provide interest free overdrafts as well as credit card options for students that provide low limits with lower than normal interest rates but these credit cards can still become expensive when compared to interest free overdrafts.
It is highly unlikely that students of higher education will graduate without falling into debt. This shouldn’t deter students from moving into further education however as it still remains true that graduates earn more than non-graduates and as long as they are able to manage their debts and spending habits they could find themselves in a comfortable financial position in later life.

An Overview Of Student Budgeting
Jun 23rd
Just the very idea of budgeting can leave a bad taste in your mouth as a student. It is simply not in your nature. Higher Education can be an expensive experience not just when it comes to studying but in the very lifestyle that partly inspired you to become a student in the first place. The good news is that it is possible to get the most out of your finances so that student life doesn’t have to be a constant feeling of strain and struggle.
If you adhere to a budget you will see that your resources can reach further than you first thought and your time at university can be an enjoyable one. What is inevitable is that if you are smart with your resources and make them last the distance, your bowings needs will be minimised and your debt once you have completed university will be a manageable one. It will also give you good experience of budgeting which could serve you well later in life.
Start by making a list of things that you would like during your time at university. This is an effort to inspire you. Next, take a look at your present financial situation in terms of incomings. How much cash do you have? How much do you have in the bank? What other sources of income do you have? Now make a list of things that you need and divide them into those needed for educational purposes and those for lifestyle. Education should be considered to be the primary need. Finally, go back to your list of wants and see if there is anything that is feasibly obtainable and make that a goal.
There are often alternatives to what may be essential or even luxury spending. For example, many students insist on owning their own laptop but universities have such facilities on hand and can be accessed for almost all of the waking day with some universities even providing 24/7 access. The library may stock the books you need and on a more personal note, you can often find trendy and even hardly worn clothes at charity shops. Charity shops have a certain connotation but some, though with a higher price-tag deal exclusively in trendier fashions.
Budgeting requires smarts and some discipline. There are a number of items such as mobile phones where you can enlist the help of price comparison Websites before making a final decision. If you adopt a mindset where budgeting is your friend rather than your enemy, you will soon start to see the fruits of your intelligence.
