Advice On Packing For College
Sep 10th
Living in a college dorm is the first time that many youths live away from home. Though the majority manage to survive without too much difficulty in the normally very basic circumstances there are a few things that will make living there a little easier. Often, it’s the small essentials that get overlooked.
- Supplies For Cleaning. Student dorms often become somewhat dirty in a short space of time, especially if there is a fair amount of socializing taking place. A mop, sponge and disinfectant are helpful for keeping this in check.
- Power Strip / Extension Cable. On average, a dorm room has between 4 and 6 electrical sockets. With appliances, computers, a television, and cell phone chargers, there is a likelihood of being more items requiring electrical power than outlets.
- Bandages and First Aid Kit. Though the college student mentality is that they are indestructible, occasionally a paper cut, shaving knick, or skinned knee needs some attention. A good first aid kit, that includes cold medication, burn ointment, and bandages is an essential for any student.
- Personal Printer / Scanner. All most all colleges provide computing areas for students to work at and to print their reports and assignments, either as a part of tuition or for a nominal fee per page. However, these facilities are often overcrowded and are subject to daytime opening times. Having the option to print without waiting around or restrictions with a personal printer is much less hassle. The big supermarkets normally offer a number of basic printers at discounted prices that perfectly fulfill a college students printing needs.
- Spare Bed Linens. The piece of furniture that takes up more space than anything else in a dorm room is the bed. Since it is the biggest object, it is often used for more than just sleeping, with it also becoming a sofa, a shelf, or a drying rack, amongst other things. This can quickly lead to spills, stains, and dirty sheets that need washing.
- Tools. Sometimes, when things break, the maintenance men don’t come quick enough or claim that it isn’t their responsibility. Getting yourself basic tools, such as a hammer and screwdriver, makes such repairs less of a problem.
- Tapes / Adhesives. A majority of colleges do not allow students to make amendments to walls in order to hang posters and picture frames. Having tape or any kind of adhesive helps to hang up posters and pictures without damaging either wall or the decorations themselves.
